ls: /: Permission denied

Ever since I reinstalled (from scratch) linux on my machine (i run gentoo) I am unable to ls the / directory. It works as root but that doesn't help. In some GUI apps the graphical directory browser likes to start out in / but panics when it can't. Kind of annoying. Never had this problem come up before - any ideas?

The group membership, UID, and GID are all identical to another machine I have so that's not the problem. When I issue "ls /" it says:
ls: /: Permission denied

For reference, on my system:
Code:
# ls -ld /
drwxr-xr-x 22 root root 4096 Feb 20 2005 /
I'm guessing somewhere along the lines the "other" permissions got screwed up. If not, then check your /etc/fstab to see if there's anything strange in the root filesystem's options.

Thanks for the quick reply. A 'chmod 755 /" worked. Next time my machine complains about permissions; i'll check the permissions
