lost video acceleration
I just 'upgraded' from xfree86 to xorg & now I have no video acceleration. I have tried dpkg xorg-reconfigure & the settings all seem to be OK. Here is xorg.conf:
Code:
xorg.conf (Xorg X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following commands as root:
#
# cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.custom
# md5sum /etc/X11/xorg.conf >/var/lib/xfree86/xorg.conf.md5sum
# dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

How do I get glx working with Xorg?
Or how do I trash Xorg so I can go back to Xfree86?
{rant} {rant} How come "upgrades" usually just louse things up...{Ok got that out of the way, feel slightly better now.

You have "Generic Video Card" installed! That isn't going to go anywhere.
You should still have /etc/XF86Config-4, installing xorg doesn't normally delete it. Examine the file, see what you have for your card, copy into xorg.conf and take it from there.
You may need to update or recompile the driver.

I think the "Generic Video Card" entry is just a label for the video cord which uses the i810 driver on the line below. However, I did dpkg reconfigure the xserver & entered i810 as the name of the video card. Functionally it made no difference. Here is what I have now:
Code:
Section "Device"
Identifier "i810"
Driver "i810"
BusID "PCI:0:1:0"
VideoRam 16384
Option "UseFBDev" "true"
EndSection
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "HP mx70"
Option "DPMS"
HorizSync 28-49
VertRefresh 43-72
EndSection
and from glxinfo
Code:
crashedagain@desktop:~$ glxinfo
name of display: :0.0
display: :0 screen: 0
direct rendering: No
server glx vendor string: SGI
server glx version string: 1.2
server glx extensions:
GLX_ARB_multisample, GLX_EXT......
here is what was in XF86Config-4:

Have you examined the log file /var/log/Xorg.0.log?

...and there it was:
Code:
(**) I810(0): DRI is disabled because it runs only at 16-bit depth.
I had checked Xorg.log earlier but hadn't seen it.
Re-configured for 16 bit depth instead of 24 & dri is working now.
Thanks.
