lost ip when using a new kernel

im using dhcp to connect to the internet.
im trying to upgrade my debian kernel from 2.20 to 2.25, and once i get that working to 2.4.x

so i make my new kernel and reboot, and it reboots just fine, except now my networking is broken. i am using the same config file that is found in my boot directory, since i really don't want to change any system settings, yet. however it doesn't seem to be able to find ip address anymore.

i would just start from scratch, but i really need to keep the current system intact and just recompile the kernel. any hints as to why dhcp stops working?

oh i did try running dhclient after i logged in and that does nothing.

First thing to do is to
make oldconfig
rather than just copying it over ...

That is different in that you're being prompted for
stuff that has been changed/added between releases,
and are safe from "funny surprises" or erratic messages
during compilation...

Cheers,
Tink

P.S.: As for your other followups ... it's always good
to choose decent sources of information...
