Loop mounting compressed folders: which ones are safe to compress?
 

Using squashfs and mhddfs (unionfs isn't available for my distro) I am able to loop mount compressed folders, namely /usr. It's great, I saved a gig of space, but I'm wondering which other folders would have files that are never edited or deleted? (I know /usr is sometimes edited and some files are deleted, but I'm gettting used to using my system as is without changing anything else, so compressing /usr is ok). For example, is /var/lib safe to compress? What about using fusecompress for /tmp? Get creative!

P.S. The reason for all this trouble is because I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 from my 7.62 GiB (8 GB) USB stick.
