Cool Looking for a new distribution, recommendations?

Hi,

I just bought a new computer, and openSUSE isn't handling it very well. There are all sorts of problems with hardware drivers, since there are a lot of unsupported things on my computer. I just need a distro that comes with good hardware support. I can modify and tweak it later, but it has to start first!

It seems that my problem is pretty consistent throughout all the other distros I tried. I always end up with something like:

Code:
time: pit clocksource has been installed
Most of them just freeze while trying to start.

thanks,
rabbit2345

Based an what you have said, it is quite likely you will have trouble with any version of Linux. OpenSUSE is one of the top distros and will not be hugely different than the other leaders.

Before trying any more versions, it might be good to tell us exactly what the problems are----so far you have given us no useful information.

Keep in mind that---for a typical set of applications and drivers for peripherals, Linux can be faster and easier to setup than Windows ever was. AND, for anything in the top ten, there are many people here at LQ that have it running smoothly.

ok, I really only have one major problem.

1. the sound is always strange. For example, I must run "alsaconf" every time I start up, or else sound in Mozilla Firefox does not work at all. Audacity also has trouble with this. Occasionally, if I do not run alsaconf, the entire sound system doesn't work.

I know I am never switching back to Windows (which doesn't work either), but I'm very confused why only opensuse 11.1 will work, nothing else. The sound system is my main problem right now.

my hardware looks like:
AMD Athlon 64
NVIDIA MCP61P northbridge chipset

thanks,

I use SimplyMEPIS & have been very impressed w/ SimplyMEPIS 8. You might want to test it on your h/w using a live CD.

Actually, no offense if you already know this, a live CD is an excellent way to test any suggestions you receive.
