Ok, customer has a Dell Vostro 410 running Slackware 13.37.

I connected a Logitech c270 webcam. I downloaded & installed Skype static 4.0.0.8. Fixed the libtiff.so.3 error that pops up when Skype starts.

Skype loads fine, I can connect to Skype Test call but microphone does not record anything. I have tried all the various suggested devices in the microphone drop list. None work.

The same webcam on another machine, an HP Compaq desktop running the same version of Slackware and the same version of Skype, works 100%. No microphone problem on the HP.

Ok, I tried Google+ Hangout with the webcam on the Dell Vostro 410 and the microphone works fine.

Does anyone have any insight into what's happening here?

Did you check microphone enabled state and audio levels in alsamixer or any other audio mixer application?

Yes, I checked with alsamixer (having been bitten by that before). The MIC level was to the max possible.
