login welcome message and desktop color how to
 

Hi linux user,
appreciate if any one can help.

1) How can I change the "welcome message" I mean the login screen message ? (where it prompt for user to enter user name) Is redhat 8 and debian 3 has the same place where I can change ? I use both redhat 8 and debian3 for my workstation.

2) After user login and enter password, I want it to appear a login message. How can I do that in redhat 8 and debian3 ?

3) After user login I want the desktop to change color how can I do that ? This is to distinguis whether user has sucessfully login to the network.

For the first part of your querry , i didnot understand what you meant by saying you want to change the welcome message , do you mean that you want the user to see " Welcome to x2000koh 's Linux System (Enigma_Revisited) " something like this after which he will enter the username and password ?? if that is the case then open the file /etc/issue and place

!! Never mind this is just a message , place ur one but only the first two lines , leave the Kernel \r on an \m line , donot edit this

wipe out whatever is in there ... and place that ..
a similar entry will be found in /etc/issue.net change that too with the same value

anyway for your second part .. the welcome message for each user can be set globally or locally , i mean the messages can be different for each user , that can be set by editing the .bash_profile of each users profile ... but whatever you write in that it will appear for that user only , but say if you want a message to appear for all the users , like " x2000koh is watching !! Beware of ur activities " edit the /etc/motd file and put it in there .. next time any user logs in he will be greeted with that message !!


for the third part .. its a dangerous proposal .. i feel you may have to write a script .. anyway i am not sure of that never had the idea of chnaging colours on users login , why try that , better you can place that welcome message.

Thanks for reply. let me provide more information.
1)not at the console mode (black and white mode). I mean the "welcome message" at gui or graphical screen before you enter username. Let say if your hostname is coco. Normally it display "welcome to coco". I want to change that to "welcome to university computer lab".

2) Let say today computer lab will be close from 12.15 -1pm for server upgrading. I want who ever login can see the message "Server will be down today due to system upgrading. Please logout at 12pm". How can I do that ? All these has to be in graphical mode after users have login.

3) The third part actually is the setup for my NIS client. NIS client can either login as local user (not connected to server) or network (connect to server). If user login as network, all configuration are taken from the NIS server. The NIS client can configure to take the configuration file (.bash_profile) from the nis server. If user not connected as network user. it will take the .bash_profile.

The purposes of this is help me to trouble shoot or once I see the color of the desktop I be able to know is it login to network or not.
