Login Incorrect for everyone including Root at console

I'm running Redhat Linux ES version 3. The system has been running fine until yesterday. The GUI crahsed and the error log filled the root File System. No one was able to login even root from the console. We were getting "Login Incorrect" as soon as the username was typed. I rebooted in Single user mode, deleted the log file, so space was not an issue, rebooted in multiuser mode and I'm Still getting the "Login Incorrect" at the console, for root or any other user. I checked the passwd and shadow files and seem to be ok..

Any help will be greatly appreciated...

- Was your PAM control file modified in any way? Post your /etc/pam.d/login if not sure.

- Does the /etc/nologin file exist?

Thanks for you comment. You were in the right track. I found the problem...The file /etc/pam.d/system-auth was in zero size. I run the autoconfig, make sure the sahdow password is selected and save. That recreates the file...

Thanks again..
