Login as different user in term

How do I login as a different user terminal whilst in a window manager of desktop
For example if I am in gnome as user joe. How do I start the terminal as user test?
Is there something similar to su for becoming a different user.

duh, tried su test, and that worked.

However I cannot run any X programs. For example mozilla, xine, gimp all complain that they cannot access display.
How do I get past that then?
