I'm a linux newbie myself, but one thing I did learn very quickly is that EVERYTHING in linux is case sensitive..thus if your password was typed at "password" when you installed it. and you type "PASSWORD" now it will tell you you've got the wrong password. Is it possible you have caps lock on when trying to log in? Or maybe you had caps lock on when you installed it? Its the only thing I can think of

Thank you for the reply, just tried it both ways to no avail.

POP your rescue CD in, boot up from there, mount your root partition as /mnt/myroot. Edit your /mnt/myroot/etc/passwd and delete everything in between the first two colons in the line that starts with root. Reboot and at the login prompt, type root as loginname and supply an empty password. That should let you right in.
