Won't except the login? What does it say exactly? Have you tried logging in as root and the user that you setup? This is very strange that it would not let you login with the users that you setup.

More info please....

just log in as root and change the password for that user. if you mean root, then at your lilo login screen press escape or ctrl-x and run "linux single" and then when you get in run "passwd" to set the root passwd, then just reboot normally.

reinstalling should always be an obscenely remote option, you should never need to reinstall for somethign that trivial. obviously though when you're not used to it there are few alternatives that would come to hand.

I get the message [Energon@localhost Energon]$ Energon is my login name.

energon_5 03-12-2003 11:44 AM

But it always shows up as [Energon@localhost Energon]$ and i can't get it to change what do i do

I don't understand. Are you able to login or not?

energon_5 03-12-2003 12:12 PM

In the installation i did Text Login screen it lets me enter my login name but when i do it gives the DOS Shell and [Energon@localhost Energon]$

So you enter your username, hit enter and it does not ask you for a password.

By the way its not a DOS shell. You'll get crucified for saying that.

Well, what is it you want to happen?

If you're looking for a windows-like environmeent with icons to click and applications that run with visual GUIs, then you selected the wrong option in installation.

When you chose text login, your interface with linux is a plain old command line. The message you recceive after login is your command prompt. It's telling you you're logged in as Energon (the first energon displayed), that you're logged onto the local machine (the @localhost), and that your current directory is Energon (more specifically, /home/Energon probably). That's it. In text mode, you run commands from a DOS-like prompt.

If that's not what you want, then you have to install XFree86 and either Gnome or KDE. Then when it asks for which logon method, choose graphical or something similar.

Looks like you successfully logged in to me?
What exactly is wrong in this?
It's a linux terminal, btw, not a "DOS shell" :}

Tinkster 03-13-2003 06:22 PM

You don't ... you just hope that no one
adds to a thread and it sinks down in the
deep, dark corners of the database ;}
