Logfiles

Hi there!
Can anyone tell me which logs should I check to see if someone had been trying to connect to my system? Thanks in advance!

Well, actually a guy scanned my system and tried to flood(funny ain't it?) me. I could see it in one of my log files but I accidentaly deleted it and now I just want to find another log file so that I could send it to our network administrator so that he would just give a ban to that guy.(He's from my network actually)
