Log in screen won-t show up, I get a black screen and mouse pinter on waiting mode

Hello, fellas, I need urgent help. If I dont solve this problem I wont be able to use my computer.

I tried to install pidgin newest version on my Ubuntu 7.10 but it was a total failure, then I tried to open a .jpeg file and I couldnt do it so i decided to restart my computer but surprisingly for me MY COMPUTER WONT SHOW THE LOG IN SCREEN ANYMORE I only get a black screen with my mouse pointer in the middle on waiting mode.

I dont know what to do, please help its urgent.

Hi Nis2k, Try a Ctl+Alt+Backspace to kill X. If that works and you get dropped to a terminal you can troubleshoot from there.
