locales what are they


i am installing debian but i was wondering what it ment by instaling locales
it has a huge selection of different ones i can choose from

but i have no idea what it means


do YOU know?

Your locale defines what character set to use, how to print numbers (i.e. scandinavians use a comma for decimal point while US/English uses a period), currency, etc. If you're American (or Canadian?) you can just leave it at the default en_US setting.
