Yes it can be done. Quality depends on hardware and type of line connection. If you have a braodband connection at home the easiest is buy one of those units that runs on its own, no computer is required. Linksys makes one. If wishing to use a usb webcam or a video capture card and camera then you need to install some software to that. I cannot remember the site but searching here or on google can help. Search for like ' linux webcam on internet '. Once you have the needed software installed and running and if you have broadband connection with a router installed between the computer and modem then you need to open the port on the router to forward the conection to the right lan machine and port. I do not know your network setup but it is best to have a router between wan internat and lan home network. All lan machones need to be statically defined IP not a dynamic IP. This way the routing on the router always goes to the correct machine IP an port even after a reboot. Like I before the easiest is a self contained unit with the proper portforwarded applied to the router.
Hope this helps

thanks for the reply, that helps. my setup is: running debian, i am behind a router but not static ip. i would like a wired camera or at least capable of and turn off the wireless. wanting the camera to be "live" but will it just capture frames every so many seconds? like to save to hard drive too. if i forward port on router would that mess with any other remote desktop or anything. little confusing.

You can check out motion. Not sure if it will meet your needs. Main use is to take pictures whenever motion is detected on the webcam or other video device. I think it also has a server so you can check it on the web.

Not really a Linux - Security question (though it is about security and linux). Moving thread to the Linux - General forum to get the exposure it deserves.
