List of Questions I need help with :)

Hello all from LQ. Here is my list of questions I would really like to know the answers for (unfortunately I cannot check this forum again till tomorrow, so hopefully by then all my questions will be answered )

1.) I am dual booting Windows XP and Redhat 9.0 using GRUB version 0.93. When it asks me which OS to boot the choice is either Redhat or DOS (DOS being my XP partition). Is there any way to rename this choice to WindowsXP as to not confuse anyone else using this PC?? Also, from XP i cannot see my linux partition and visa versa, how do I get it working so I can see both partitions from each os?

2.) I have tried installing new themes, yet all it does is flicker the "busy" icon for a split second, then does nothing. I would like to know if anyone else has encountered this and how did they get aorund it? I REALLY dig the Gorilla theme for GNOME, yet I cant get the darn thing isntalled.

3.) I am also experiencing the above-mentioned problem with Icons.

4.) I do not particularly like the graphics in the panel at the bottom of my screen (the big red hat etc.) I know this is a characteristic of Redhat, but im sure I've seen screenshots of Redhat systems with either words (ie a taskbar like panel) or with different icons. How do I customise/change this? All i can do is add/remove features from the current panel.

5.) The system isn't connected to the net. How do I remove any unwanted services etc? How do I go about it as im sure there's things running that are wasting resources (Im not low on resources, just want to get as much juice from this machine as possible!)

Lastly, I just wanted to add that I got this box today, it's a nForce2 ultra 400 mboard with onboard sound etc (MSI K7N2 Delta-L) and it works like a dream under Redhat 9.0! I didn't notice a single hiccup during install, and sound etc worked perfectly straight off the bat (I had to set up sound after initial install of XP as it didn't pick it up!) Hows that for hardware support

Thanking you in advance.

1) edit your /boot/grub/grub.conf file, just swap out the name, you'll understand it.

2) Yeah gnome is funny with themes sometimes, make sure you tar your archive into the /home/%user/.themes directory

3) To be honest I'm not really sure where the icons are stored.

4) You can left click on that redhat icon and hit properties or preferences, i forget which, and just change the icon file. Also if the panel is too large for your tastes, you can click on a blank spot and do properties on that as well. Just play around with gnome a little, it's very customizable.

5) I think Redhat 9 has a way of removing packages, but I'm not positive, I haven't had rh9 installed in a while.

To remove packages in RedHat 9, you can use the GUI tool.
In the menu, go to System Settings and click on Add/Remove Applications.

1)
edit either your lilo.conf or grub.conf file, depending on which you used [I know that lilo is stored in /etc/lilo.conf], and substitute WinXP under the "label" for this partition. Remember to run the "lilo" command after doing this.
I'm not sure what support there is under windows for a linux file system, but I'm fairly sure that both can read vfat / fat32 partitions. ntfs support in linux is dodgy at best, and *don't* try to write to it otherwise it will corrupt it. You'll need to mount it using "mount -t vfat /dev/hdxx" command.

4)
should be in the gnome control panel somewhere, you can change the size of the icons &c...

5)
"top" should show you processes by cpu usage, although if you're not using a service [eg telnet], it shouldn't be using up any resources at all. I think that more of an issue is the security risk when connecting to the internet of such redundant services such as telnet....

Either change distro to one that doesnt remove MP3 libs etc or find the ones needed ( used to be linked from xmms.org but cant find it) or install an official release from xmms.org
