Linux User Info script aka how to get information about users fast

Hello All,

I have started to write scripts to make user management easier as I couldn't find a CLI tool that fits my needs.

On some unix systems there are some tools like smitty (AIX), but not on Linux. Currently three versions are written - RedHat, Debian and Ubuntu.

I have decided to share it on Github, but not sure if much people will really use it:
https://github.com/Avyd/Linux_User_Info

Code:
    -h Help message.
-i User information, use as "-i user".
    -x eXtended information.
    -a List all users.
-l List all users with locked password.
-u List all users with unlocked password.
-n List users with nologin shell.

You can user multiple arguments too, eg. "lui_debian.sh -l -u"

What do you think? Would you use such script to manage users?

It looks nice, I might try it out! Personally, I have created a few scripts for this before, although not so well structured.

Thank you for the reply. It's great that other people notice these tools are missing.

Would you share your script? It may give me some ideas to implement more into Linux_User_Info.

Very nice!

Suggestions:
  • last login for user
  • all logins for user
  • list files owned by user
  • list any errors caused by user
  • list aliases for user
  • current processes for user
  • number of sent mail for user
  • spool items of user
  • list open files for user

Really, there is a lot of stuff you can pluck out that would be handy to have. Just keep looking.

Thanks for the ideas. I have added a todo/idea list to the git repository.

Deb and rpm packages are coming soon!
