Linux unstable after attaching primary slave IDE HDD

Whenever I attach a Primary Slave to my computer, my system crashes. It doesn't crash right away, but only after about 5-10 minutes of doing stuff (checking email, browsing, etc.)

Does anyone know what the deal is here?

i had this happen too. it is not linux being slow, it is the computer being slow. this usually happens because of the computer not liking how its set up. if its set up as slave, change it to cable select. if its set to cable select, set to slave, or put it somewhere else.

Actually, I think it's something to do with my mail that is causing the system to crash.

I took off the slave drive, and my system crashed just now. I had StarOffice open with my Inbox open. Something really strange is going on. Whenever I start my system, some program called "sendmail" takes literally a full 5 minutes to start up. When I don't open StarOffice, my system seems to be just fine it doesn't crash. But if I leave StarOffice open, it will crash after about 5 minutes.

Does anyone know what I can do to fix my system?

hmmm...i guess i was wrong. and that is very strange, but i dont really know what would be causing it

Well I finally narrowed things down. It turns out that attaching a primary slave HDD was a red herring. The crashing only happens after opening StarOffice 5.2. If I don't open StarOffice, my system never crashes.

So StarOffice crashes my system (after about 5 minutes after I open it). And when I reboot my system "sendmail" takes about 5 full minutes to start.

Maybe someone out there can put two and two together and help me figure out exactly what's going on and how to fix it.
