Linux thinks /etc is a file

On an ext3 file system, the /etc directory has been corrupted, and Linux (on a live CD) seems to think that it is a file. How can I retrieve the contents of the directory?

Run fsck against the partition. For example:

fsck -t ext3 /dev/hda3
