linux stalls, where to find clues

Hi,

I have a small server running Suse 9.3. Recently it has begun freezing, often while copying files from one partition on a harddrive to another partition on the same harddrive, but also at other times.
My question is this: Is there any log files or such in which i can find clues to why it freezes. Or what would you do to find the cause of the problem?

Hope someone can tell me where to start looking.

Thanks in advance,
Lasse
