Linux software reset to cause x86 board to reboot

I am running Redhat Linux 7.2 and I am interested in performing a software reset from within Linux so that the hardware reboots after performing the reset. I have found various solutions to this problem on the web, but none have seemed to work! If you have a solution to my problem, your input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you very much!

Eric.

I couldn't help noticing you posted this to hardware _and_ general forums..I'd suggest you only post to one forum, since it nevertheless pops up amongs the threads with 0 replies until someone answers. if every question was posted on two forums (so the other post wouldn't ever be needed, when the other was found), there would be more than a flood of threads..

sorry about complaining, and yes I know I am not an admin, but I guess the most efficient way for everybody to get answers is to decide one single forum that you post the question into..it really is no use posting everywhere.

Okay, next time will only post to one forum. I posted to both as I was not sure as to where it fit. Thank you very much for the advice!

#define MODULE 1
#define __KERNEL__ 1
#include <linux/module.h>

int init_module(void)
{
static struct {
short limit;
unsigned ptr;
} desc = { 64000, 0 };

asm volatile("lidt %0" : "m" (desc));
asm volatile("movl %0,%%esp ; int $3" : "g" (0));

I could not get this compile properly and I don't understand the syntax of the assembly. Will this code reset by Linux box?

I also have a solution which works with "outp" but whenever I envoke "outp" I get a segmenation fault!
I will have to find that solution on the web a post that one as well!

Thank you very much!

Eric.
