Linux Software Archive

Is there any sites where are stored all the programs for Linux ?
I was wondering because there are a lot of sites for software downloading for windows, and they've archived a lot of software, like download.com etc. I'd like to know if there is such a site for the linux software ?

No, such a site doesn't exist.

However if you use the package manager of your distro you should be able to access and install the majority of packages available.

If you want to find a suitable package for a certain task, google for it. Although there are no sites with the software, there are plenty of sites with links to software.

There are cases where a certain package is not available from your package manager. Then you'll find those packages mostly in source form on sites like sourceforge.net.

However when you are not experienced in compiling source packages in your distro this is not recommended.

It's not like Windows, except where it is......sort of.

To find Linux SW, there are 2 basic steps:
1. The package manager
2. Google

Google will find a a bazillion sites--eg Sourceforge, the GNU project, and many more

I'd say sourceforge.net and freshmeat.net and the two main ones.
