no.. you got it wrong, KDE and Gnome are not shells, they are desktop's along with window managers. Your shell is bash, csh, ksh... and any other shell you want to use. bash is the default shell in linux.
might want to read up on unix shells if you want to know more...
Nope, KDE and GMOME are not shells, they are window managers (desktop environments) for linux, the shell is something different, shell allows you execute system calls without dealing with handlers, like for example you want to save a file to a directory, you open a save as dialog box, a couple of clicks and you're done, the same can be acomplished with shell ( look at it as MS-DOS command prompt), you can cd into any directory, and save the file there. And if you think about it, then you'll see that any GUI is just a front-end to shell commands, so what you do with GUI you can do (even faster) in shell.
And what the heck you can even write your own shell, define functions to execute system calls and such.
Common shells are bash, bourne, korn, and c shells, and a handfull of others.
You're ALL wrong. Shells are what you find on the beach, take home and clean, then adding them to your already massive collection. Right? Sorry, i'm bored and it's early...

must be bored if you posted it twice..
I found it best when it hangs while posting.. first hit stop. copy/paste what you want to reply with, then hit the back button and refresh the thread your viewing, if you post shows up, it went thru, if it doesn't, hit the reply and try it again and it almost always goes thru without hanging up again the second time around..
I know..LOL I hate it when it hangs. I'm about as fast on my feet as a turtle, so when it hangs, i start thinking about doing a stop or back, but once that's started it's already posted. haha...I'll have to speed up a little in the morning here.
