Linux serial connection problems

Hi All,
I'm facing an issue when making a serial connection in Linux. We have an AlterPath ACS terminal server box that I'm currently trying to configure. It has a serial over 8P8C port that I'm connecting to a server through a CAT cable and a DB-9 connector.

The box recommends a baud rate of 9600 with 8 bits. Now, when I initiate a connection using these settings, GNU/Screen freezes completely but when started without any of these like so:

PHP Code:
screen /dev/ttyS0
the connections seems to happen, but not stable. i.e. Many of the input characters are not detected or at least dont show up on screen and the output gets garbled.

This is the first time I'm making a serial connection and I'm not sure where the problem is. Can someone please comment on this?

Thanks

Have you tried other terminal programs, like cutecom or picocom?
picocom --flow n -l -b9600 /dev/ttyS0

Check also you have given the user permission to use serial ports or tried to run it as root.

Is the divice correct perhaps its: /dev/ttyUSB0 or /dev/tty0

Did you ckeck if there is some HW flow control problem?

/Henrik

Thanks for your reply @xehpuk. After a few attempts I replaced the original serial cable (that I had assembled using three small ones) by one long cable and this seems to have fixed the issue for now.

Thanks
