Question Linux root user log in problem

Help! Help! Help! I really need someone to rescue me.
I have been struggled over a month for this problem.

The nightmare was started I upgraded my RH old 6.1 to new 7.2,
then a strange thing happening. I can not log in as a root user.
It is always showing a authentication failed message after I typed
the password that I successfully used before the upgrading. But on the contrast, I still can use the previous password that for my normal account to log in as a regular user.

Can anybody to let me know, Is there a clue or remedy to reset
the password for the root user or some other good suggestion?
I really need to log in as a root user to config my OP after the
unpredictable upgrading.

Thanks in advance.
