Lightbulb Linux on Playstation 2?

I was reading on the internet about the Linux kit for the PS2. Unfortunatly it costs $200 and is no longer manufactured. I do, however, already have a HDD installed on my PS2. So what I'm asking is, has anyone ever managed to run Linux on PS2 without the kit? I think it would be really cool to surf the net, check e-mail, and play emulators on there. Plus it would 'stand out' from the other ps2s. Any help is much appreciated!

From what I understand, the kit contained 2 disks, one is the nonproprietary gnu/linux os, and the other is a proprietary piece of software that allows linux to run on the box. I think the kit came with the keyboard and the rest of the necessary goodies. Also, I believe the kits aren't available in the US only, so you may want to try some foreign sites. I think I saw a book on Amazon about hacking your PS2 and Xbox of all things to make it run Linux. That may be the way to go. You might save some money, and the satisfaction of doing it yourself would have to be pretty sweet.

Thanks for your response. I don't have a penny to spend so I honestly can't buy the kit. I already have a HDD, USB keyboard/mouse, and I'd buy a monitor adaptor if I really needed one. What book are you talking about? I searched Amazon for any books that had anything to do with PS2 hacks - all I found was a PS2 for dummies book which I don't think will do the job. I know this is possible, some guy told me he was running it fine........

I did a quick search and couldn't find it either. I would just worry about getting your hands on that proprietary playstation linux disk in the correct region... or continue searching.

hdloader is what you are looking for. Google is your friend. Also is the HD compatible with PS/2? Check here.

Torrmented, I'm the guy who talked to you before. I though you backed out on me I already have HDLoader. I got a 120GB Maxtor and, yes, it works, and I love it - can't beat the load times. So what do I do next?

You can't just "install blackrhino." If you read the instructions on the site, the official linux kit is required, or the official ps2 distro rather. Cause you can only download the base image of blackrhino....

but i want to know, will they work on slim ps2?
otherwise it`s possible to use diskless project
