Linux on Dell vs OS X
I was going to put this in the general but this question is Linux specific. I'm about to purchase a laptop to go overseas. Which do you think will be better? A Dell running Slackware or a Apple with OS X? I just want to hear what everyone thinks on how the two will compare performance wise.

depends on what your doing....not going against Linux, but a Mac with OS X would be REALLY good.....and plus it has darwin on it, so you will feel pretty much at home as you would with a Linux lap....

hehe. If you'ld like a nice looking toy for your overseas experience, sure...get a MAC.
If you want to get some real work done, and plan on keeping the computer for a long time. Then definately go for the Dell. However, I would much recommend an HP. I believe HP were the first brand computer to ship with Linux. Their systems are much more compatible and they have much more experience in dealing with their laptop hardware and compatibility with Linux.
So I would definatelly get an HP in any case.

I have used an Dell Latitude C500 with linux (mandrake, RH, debian) the only thing not working was the modem, the other things worked. The comp. was equipped with:
3com 10/100 NIC & modem (combined, the lan worked fine)
toshiba sd1202 cdburner/dvdreader
ati (something 8mb graphicscard)
An it was the most stable and best build notebook i ever used (keyboard, screen layout etc.)
I have seen some tests of the HP machines and they always get pretty low scores. (haven used one myself though)
Just my 2cents
