Linux on Dell 8600 Inspiron

I am using a Dell 8600 Inspiron with Windows XP. I would like to migrate to Linux.

Could I purchase a blank hard drive from Dell. Install Linux on this new hard drive and be done with it?

If I needed Windows XP, I could simply swap hard drives and reboot.

yes, either of these scenarios would work. not a bad idea, if you don't mind paying the extra.

dual booting is okay too. and you can read your windows partition from linux... that said performance of paritions way back on the disk is slightly worse, as the head has to move further....
