Linux not booting past kernel startup

I have just cross installed an old redhat server I have at a colo with debian using debootstrap etc. but keeping the old kernel.

All went well and things looked good until I rebooted and couldn't get into contact with the server.

Having gone into safe mode which boots a small distro from ramdisk (thankyou 1and1 hosting) I looked at my syslog (sorry for long cut and paste):

then nothing...and I can't even ping it from the network.

Where am I going wrong?
If the kernel boots and the fs mounts, then surely init shoud kick in and start everything else?
Why does cron start and nothing else?

Any help gratefully received.

Thanks

J.

Could it be that some of the cron jobs that are started just at the end there takes a long time, so that the startup process waits for that to finish? I ended up with that yesterday. I had put an updatedb (update the slocate database) in rc.local and forgotten to & it. It took forever, and I thought something bad had happened.

Looks like your CRON is out of sync somehow, i would remove it from your startup untill you can figure out what is going on. May boot correctly once it is taken out of your startup.
