Linux Mint 17 (Cinnamon) versus Linux Mint 17-1 (Cinnamon)

I am a very new user of Linux and currently have Mint V17. I can see in my updates that I can update to V17-1.
As Linux is totally different to what I am used to then would it be safe to update to the latest version.
Also a daft question but would I need to make a back up copy of any files like Pictures or Documents?
Would appreciate any assistance on this

Tikiman,

If Mint 17 is behaving itself then there is no real need to upgrade to 17.1.

If you do decide to do the upgrade, then follow the advice here:

http://lmelinux.net/2014/12/05/upgra...-mint-17-17-1/

and always do a backup of personal data, including all documents, pictures, bookmarks etc and email folder (if applicable).

The alternative is to do a fresh installation of 17.1, after doing a backup.

Thank you kindly for your answer beachboy2 I have loked at Mint 17 and apparently Mint 17-1 is a 3D version with problems with older video cards and monitor screens. I have both monitor screen and video card of the older generation so will not be progressing to Mint 17-1.
Many thanks
