Debian GNU/Linux 2.4.20 locking up with MSI 865PE MB

I have installed Debian GNU/Linux on a new system that has:
Samsung DDR 333 Dual (256X2)
P4 2.26 Ghz
IBM 80 GB HDD
FDD
Samsung DVD
NEC DVD+RW
SBLive! 5.1
USB SMC 10/100 NIC (Peagasus Driver)
Nvidia FX5200 video card.

I have installed Nvidia Driver version 43.63

I do not start X at boot.
I have compiled linux kernel 2.4.20 (no patches)
I ran fsck on my drive -- later below .......
System starts up doing a full check on memory. O.k.

This is the issue. When I start X 4.3.0
Gnome desktop environment. Everything seems o.k.
When I launch a program like Mozilla. The system freezes when Mozilla home page comes up. When I launch any program it either halts, exits or system immediately freezes.

The same configuration worked on a 845E motherboard (Abit).
Same memory, same HDD, different video. I even switched back to an older nvidia (TNT) card and it still locks up.

Whan I ran fsck.ext3 I get this:

Unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address 00018566 - 21.4%

printing eip:
c02ac0a0
*pde = 00000000
Oops: 0002
CPU: 0
EIP: 0010:[<c02ac0a0>] Tainted: P
EFLAGS: 00010246
...... too much to type the rest.. :-(
.....
....

Warning... fsck.ext3 for device /dev/hda7 exited with signal 11.

hda7 is my /USR

I backed up my system to another drive and loaded it back on the same old configuration with the Abit board and it worked fine....
After recompiling the Nvidia and Alsa drivers. :-)

Any assistance would be appreciated.

I figured it out. It was memory. I took back the 333Mhz Samung and purchased the 400Mhz CL 2.5 Samsung DIMMS (2).
I can now install the latest kernel and even overclock to 150Mhz.

2.55 Stable. I also took back the Nvidia 5200FX and upgraded to a Nvidia Ti4200 8X AGP 128MB card. Nice. :-)

so everything's fine on the 2.4.20 kernel? everything on the mobo supported?

i just bought a mobo with the same chipset over a week ago, and been looking for info bout how it runs under linux. btw which debian dist was it?

Sorry it took so long for me to post back. :-(

I am using Debian 3.01 (Woody).
I just upgraded to kernel 2.4.21
The latest on kernel.org.

It works pretty good. Do not forget to update your pci- id's

# update-pciids

You should have your box connected to the internet.
The only issue I am having is that I now have two of these boards. The second board I did not upgrade with third party goodies. Lack of funds.

However I did spend the extra $5 dollars and got onboard video.
XFree86 4.3.0 makes good use of the video. (i810 module)
However I cannot get the sound to work using Also or just compiling the kernel with
Sound, Intel sound (ICH 3, 4, etc.....)

If I just compile the kernel with just Sound and then compile the Alsa drivers.....
The modules load, but there is no sound.
I posted my config file in the Linux Hardware section:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...threadid=65534

I narrowed it down to not having PCM control.

Let me know what you find out and if your sound works?
