Linux installation problem

Masters,

I really need help here.... I had to format my system so my installed Linux goes away..

Now I am trying to fresh installation, but stuck at one point, did RND for 2-3 days but no luck, hence posting here....

I am stuck on the "installation method" step..As I am trying to install from external DVD wrtr so I have chossen "Hard drive"....Now in "Directory holding Images" I have given "/" ,"islinux", "images" ,"e:"(my dvd drive is E: on xp) , and some other option but no luck...Even I tried F2 option here but nothing happened..

Please let me know how I can start my instalation..I really messed up with this.

That makes completely no sense what so ever... Can you please explain more clearly, and what "installation step" are you talking about? Are you following a guide?

What is a wrtr? And what is the "other option?" You need to be clear with what you are doing, and spell out your words.

Wrtr-->USB DVD Writer(you can say it as USB DVD)..

other option ---> just some path like "/E:", "/E/isolinux", "/E:/images" etc..

Linux doesn't list drives with letters, they're listed as sda, sdb, sdc and so on.
And cd & dvd drives are sr.. I think sr0 and up

I have chossen "installation method" as hard drive and press Ok....now new screen came as "Select Partition", and the text wrtn here as:

"What partition and directory on that partition hold the CD(iso9660) images for red hat enterprise linux server? If you don't see the disk drive you're using listed here, press F2 to configure additional device."

Then I have a directory listed as /dev/hda1 and a text box as:

Directory holding images: ---------------

1) I put / and other option on this this text box(including sr and sr0 as suggeted above) and got below message:
"Device /dev/hda1 does not appear to contain Red hat Enterprise Linux Server CDROM images"(When I enter /)
"Failed to read directory /tmp/hdimage/sr : No such file or directory"(When I enter sr,sr0,e:, etc)

2)I pressed F2 to see other devices and got new screen as "Driver disk Source"

"You have multiple devices which could serve as source for a drive disk. Which would you like to use?"

and I have 2 option here "hdc" and "hda" but none worked...

My reply:
You are trying to install RHEL from a bootable DVD in a DVD-Writer and you are choosing to install from your hard drive. Try telling it to install your bootable DVD from the a)CD-ROM. I believe you will have better success.

Hello,

What image of RHEL did you download? This sounds like you might be using a netinstall image.

Kind regards,

Eric

I think you'd better config your BIOS.let your USB the first starting device.

Hello,

Did you check the checksum of your downloaded image? It looks like you go into stage1 of the booting process correctly but for some reason the installer doesn't detect stage2, just like if you would be installing from a netinstall. Check the checksum of your downloaded image, if it's not as it should be (check the web where you downloaded) then download again. Also, get the latest version 6, works a lot better, is more up to date and has a newer kernel on board.

Kind regards,

Eric
