Linux Installation problem

Hi,
I am installing Redhat 7.2 on my machine with previously Windows 98 installed. I create 5GB of unallocated space and install Linux there. The installation runs smoothly. But When I boot the system it boots directly in Windows 98. I have even tried removing all the previous partitions and installing Windows98 prior to Linux with the same effect.
Can anyone tell me where i'm faltering.
Thnx
Abhra

You need to install a bootloader. either lilo or grub. Its usually an option as your installing redhat.

If you didn't do this then Win98 will continue to boot off the HD first.

Yes I forgot to mention I did install LILO and also tried with GRUB, but got the same result

Did you create a boot disk, to get into your Linux?

If you did can you give us your lilo.conf or grub.conf. and also the setup of your drive (Patiotions etc)

That will help

No I didnt created a boot disk. I have a 20 GB HDD. First partition is 9GB FAT32 Primary and active, 2nd is extended partition with two logical drives 3GB each both FAT32, I installed Linux on the rest unallocated space. Some body told me to create the bootloader in the linux partition itself, but with that would I get the OS selection menu at the startup?..forget it first get Linux running...

You would only get the bootloader if you've installed it on the MBR of the first hard disk.

MBR = Master Boot Record

I would suggest you re-install Linux with grub installed on the MBR. It will know where windows is and create a nice screen that pops up so that you can select either Windows or Linux.

Also create a boot floppy as well, so you can get into linux if it fails. Its a pain I know.

Hi abhram,

You would only install the bootloader in the linux partition itself if you already have a bootloader installed in the MBR. This would only be true if you're running winNT, win2k and winXP.

For win98, you would need to install lilo or grub onto the MBR itself so that you have a bootloader there, just like leonscape said.

Good luck!
