Hi Everybody!
Another newbie trying to get in the game. Have been trying to get my old system up on linux (figured I'd learn on that before smashing my laptop...) I Tried to install Mandrake. Burned the image off the Web, then booted up on CDROM. First screen shows up, then upon hitting enter to start the boot, I get a Kernel Panic message (i tried switching to text mode and various other options to no avail). Completely, utterly, Lost. Been on the forums and googling for 6 hours over this (i must really want out from Windows) . The system is a AMD 2/450 with ALi chipset (i think). any clues? thanks guys and gals! Oh, I don't think the file is corrupt, I got past this screen when I popped it into my laptop.
Thanks for helping,
The Distro was Mandrake 9.2, Kernel 2.4.22. I also tried Gentoo 1.4 (Live CD) but the same deal happens. On Gentoo I used both 2.4.21 and 2.4.20 Kernels.
the system i'm trying to run it on:
AMD K6 2/450
BIOS reports 163840 K-- I got 160M installed-- this right???
Chipset: Aladdin5
Video Card: Rage 128 Ati
I suspect it could be a Video Card problem, the way the screen turns black and sometimes a bright band of jargled colors appears at the very top of the screen. Every other time the computer just resets itself. but then, could a video card affect the install so early? i guess thats a dumb question... Should I try another distro? I don't think it will matter until i get this bug fixed though.
Thanks so much for your help,
Justin
ps... Sorry XavierP, guess I'm just being optimistic!
after downloading the ISO, did you do a MD5sum check, to check the integrity of your newly created CD? How to do this for Mandrake should be explained at the download page where you got the distro from.
to me, it sounds like there's a problem with the actual CD, and that's why it's freaking out at install time.
Tried vga16, verbose, text etc. no go. only lets me see the kernel panic message.
Tried Redhat9 today too, this is what I got.
Code: 18 47 11 c0 e9 a2 fe ff ff 89 f6 00 68 a4 ef 10 c0 e9 94
<0> Kernel Panic: Attempted to kill the idle task!
In Idle task - not syncing
Pretty much the same as Mandrake.
Mandrake was identical, except the code: 17 c0 39 a2 fe ff ff 89 f6 6a 00 68 c4 d6 16 c0 e9 94 fe ff
Does this make sense to anyone?
Tried CD's on my Compaq laptop- Install worked fine(as far as it got), couldn't install yet though on laptop cause I've back ups to make.
Are there any settings in my BIOS that could be upsetting this? Changed it to Non PnP OS already, and turned on APIC. Also Tried default settings.
Should I try doing anything to prep the HD?
Could my Memory be compatible w/ windows but not linux?
I'm having the identical symptoms on an old-ish PC. I just did a FORMAT C: to wipe out a Win98 installation and have tried Mandrake 10.0, Fedora Core 1, and SuSE 9.0 CD installs. Same panic occurs after I hit <Enter> at the first graphical page. If I try a text install I get the message about attempting to kill the idle task. The CPU fan is working, 128M ram. Have you had any joy yet? I've joined LinuxQuestions to get this sorted, so I'd appreciate any help.
