linux in arabic

Hey guys, I've got a problem:

A friend who can only read arabic (and also has never used a computer before) asked me if I could install an OS on an old computer he bought. I don't know arabic, is there a way to install everything in english and then switch the system language at a later point?

Also I think the keyboard is a normal qwerty, so I'm not sure how he's going to type arabic with it...

If someone has any bright ideas, let me know!

Many distributions allow you to select the language you want during install.

Ask your friend if he has an Arabic keyboard. In which case, simply select an Arabic keymap during install.

Yes Linux gives this option to change UI language.

Suppose you are using UBUNTU (A popular Linux Distribution)

Open system settings
Personal -> language support
Now install it.

Click on Install/Remove languages.
Enable checkbox Arabic. Install it.
Nowselect Arabic and apply system wide.

You'll also need to configure LibreOffice: click on Tools - Options - Languages, then tick the Complex text layout box and select Arabic from the list.

Many distros have good Arabic fonts, and you can find more at
