linux ide-cdrom regression

I would register and post this to the kernel mailing list, but I donot know enough yet.

I am trying to figure out how to identify the exact nature of this bug and would like any help on this or reports from anybody experiencing the same problem.

The kernels a I have thus far tested are the 2.6.17, 2.6.18, and 2.6.19.
All have the same problem.

Now, the problem is that when under linux, any cdrom in the drive is accessed in any manner, the program (such as mount /media/cdrom0) will hang as if in a deadlock (or in an infinite loop) while the cd-rom spins up and continues spinning until the machine is forcefully powered off. Once this deadlock occurs, every single other program that attempts to access (or even stop, such as eject /media/cdrom) the cdrom will join in on the deadlock. The cdrom never stops spinning (unless is shatters).

I had originally thought this were specific to one type of machines I have had to use, but I now came across this exact problem on completely different hardware.

The first (series of identical computers in regards to hardware) have this proble, but some with an outdated and no longer released/available bios from ibm actually work correctly. No bios past 2002 to present date work. For these machines it was tested to be a motherboard bios problem as a number of very different cd-rom devices were connected and had the same problem.

The first one is an intel based machine.

The second one pretty much has the same problems, I have yet to add in a new cd-rom, but I will be trying that shortly.

The second one is amd (athlon-xp) based.

Can anybody give me ideas as to how to identify what is causing this problem?
Does anybody have any suggestions on what to do from here?
Can anybody tell me anything that I may not know that I need to ask?
