at the moment, I have a Windows XP host with 1.5 GB RAM, with the following guests: RH 9, FC 3, Debian Woody, and Debian Sarge. All of them are running X window and are very responsive.

I'm sure it will work well either way.

I'm running Gentoo as the host OS on a laptop with VMware 4.5.2. I have XP Pro as the guest OS. Personally, I like this setup because Gentoo takes much longer to install when compared to Windows. I usually reinstall Windows every 3 - 4 months, so I would much rather only have to re-install Windows than both. Also, linux is pretty much a virus-free environent, whereas Windows is a massive target, so I prefer to run in linux 99% of the time and only run Windows (through VMware) when I need to use one or two of the apps in there. I hope this helps.
