These effects worked before when I had a nvidia FX5200 card on another computer. Anyway, it's not that important. Compiz is just a novelty. :)

Both those work just fine with both the open source and proprietary drivers on their supported GPUs. Having them not work is a configuration issue with compiz, not an issue with them being "not supported" with the card.

It's possible.

All I know for sure is the effects worked with the nvidia card I had before. Maybe I reinstall compiz in the future and try again.

2) I want to keep the poll current, this means current cards, that's why I said that you should be using the card now, so that can gauge current hardware and driver quality rather than many many years ago.

This is why I limited your choices in a most evil and draconian way :)

If you only wanted to discuss 'curerent' cards, you should have limited more. Eg-

I have an ATI/AMD 4XXX-5XXX-6XXX GPU/IGP/APU and I recommend ATI/AMD
I have an NVIDIA 9XXX-GTXXX-GTSXXX-GTXXX IGP/GPU and I recommend NVIDIA
I have an Intel i3/i5/i7 (and iX based, eg G620) or intel atom intergrated video adapter and I recommend Intel
I have another intergrated video/IGP/GPU and I recommend it (specify below)

Just because the intergrated video/IGP/GPU is still in use doesnt mean its current.

I wouldnt say 'worthless'. Its no help if you want to get into deeper analysis of cards/drivers/support, but I dont think that any sort of 'deep analysis' is what H_TeXMeX_H is after with this poll.

Same thing with drivers. For example, if you use Debian Stable with the drivers from the repository you are using driver versions that are far from current.

@ adamk75

I reinstalled compiz and all effects worked now with the ATI card.

I believe I didn't install the extra and unsupported plugins for compiz earlier. This time I install all the plugins and more and everything is good now. I guess ATI linux drivers have gotten better.

I've still got an old NVidia 7600GT. Have been using NVidia binary blob. No complains here but I don't really use any desktop effects (I don't use a DE:). The only thing that may be stressing it are regular Minecraft sessions.

I used ATi cards for over 20 years, but when the last one died all I could find locally was Nvidia. The card and the drivers have worked flawlessly straight out of the box since day one. Wish I had made the switch to Nvidia years ago.

JZL240I-U 02-16-2012 06:14 AM

I use an ATI/AMD integrated Radeon HD 4290 graphics in the chipset which I recommend :p. And I have a Sapphire card with a AMD Radeon HD 5450 chip which I want to use in a multiseat setting (not yet realized again).

PrinceCruise 02-16-2012 12:49 PM

I use Intel integrated card and I do f**n not recommend it. Use Nvidia on Linux, get life.

I have 3 Asus EAH6770 cards (AMD/ATi) on machines all running linux, i would recommend them however always with a warning. Do your research first.

I like the nVidia unified driver architecture. I've never had a problem with the nVidia driver. The binary Debian drivers work great. Dual DVI monitors out of the box. I don't remember the last ATI card I had, but nVidia got a bit of a jump into linux.

My vote is I have an ATI card BUT, I have no comments on recommending it :/

such way for my ASUS/ATI HD 5450, not so better than the Intel built-in my motherboard, not fit to OpenGL neither 3D effects, which I'd to disable :-/

Let no-one ever again say that NVidia's drivers are stable. Here are the bugs that existed in the version prior to the current one:

Quote:

Added support for the following GPU:
Tesla X2090
Fixed a bug that caused black areas to appear on the back faces of some models in Maya.
Fixed a bug that resulted in the printing of spurious loader error messages.
Fixed a bug that could cause X to crash after hotplugging displays.
Fixed a bug which caused face selections to be misrendered in Maya when using the paint selection tool.
Improved performance for interactive tools in Mudbox.
Added a "--no-opengl-files" option to nvidia-installer to allow installation of the driver without OpenGL files that might conflict with already installed OpenGL implementations.
Split the DFP configuration page in nvidia-settings into multiple tabs, allowing the controls to be displayed on smaller screens.
Fixed a bug that could cause some OpenGL applications (including desktop environments like KDE and GNOME Shell) to hang.
Fixed a bug that prevented the internal panel from working on some laptops with GeForce 7 series GPUs.
Fixed an OpenGL bug where using display lists on Fermi-based GPUs could result in missing rendering in some cases.
Fixed an OpenGL bug that caused incorrect rendering when using framebuffer objects to render to 16-bit color textures with alpha.
Fixed two bugs that caused sporadic application crashes in some multi-threaded OpenGL applications.
Fixed a bug that caused creating OpenGL 4.2 contexts with glXCreateContextAttribsARB to fail.
Fixed a bug that caused OpenGL to print
Xlib: extension "NV-GLX" missing on display ":0". when used with a non-NVIDIA implementation of the GLX X extension.
Implemented color depth 30 (10 bits per component) support for GeForce 8 series and higher GPUs.
Implemented support for constraining cursors to the visible regions of connected displays; see the "ConstrainCursor" X Option in the README for details.
I don't know about you, but I find that list to be frightful.

H_TeXMeX_H 03-02-2012 09:28 AM

And, think of all the bugs they didn't yet fix ... including the one that has forced me to switch to nouveau, where the bug is fixed.
