All I know for sure is the effects worked with the nvidia card I had before. Maybe I reinstall compiz in the future and try again. |

I reinstalled compiz and all effects worked now with the ATI card. I believe I didn't install the extra and unsupported plugins for compiz earlier. This time I install all the plugins and more and everything is good now. I guess ATI linux drivers have gotten better. |
I've still got an old NVidia 7600GT. Have been using NVidia binary blob. No complains here but I don't really use any desktop effects (I don't use a DE:). The only thing that may be stressing it are regular Minecraft sessions.

I used ATi cards for over 20 years, but when the last one died all I could find locally was Nvidia. The card and the drivers have worked flawlessly straight out of the box since day one. Wish I had made the switch to Nvidia years ago.

I use an ATI/AMD integrated Radeon HD 4290 graphics in the chipset which I recommend :p. And I have a Sapphire card with a AMD Radeon HD 5450 chip which I want to use in a multiseat setting (not yet realized again).

I use Intel integrated card and I do f**n not recommend it. Use Nvidia on Linux, get life.

I have 3 Asus EAH6770 cards (AMD/ATi) on machines all running linux, i would recommend them however always with a warning. Do your research first.

I like the nVidia unified driver architecture. I've never had a problem with the nVidia driver. The binary Debian drivers work great. Dual DVI monitors out of the box. I don't remember the last ATI card I had, but nVidia got a bit of a jump into linux.

Let no-one ever again say that NVidia's drivers are stable. Here are the bugs that existed in the version prior to the current one:

And, think of all the bugs they didn't yet fix ... including the one that has forced me to switch to nouveau, where the bug is fixed.
