What graphics card do you use on Linux, and do you recommend the graphics card you use to others ?

EDIT2: I don't want to get into technicalities about what is a card and what is not a card. When I say card I mean a graphics device that enables your screen to light up and stuff to be displayed.

I have always used nvidia cards because of nvidia's long-time linux support. I understand that amd (ati) now has excellent support under linux, but that should have happened a long time ago. Not switching now.

Since your poll is somewhat flawed (missing the options "I have a Nvidia card and recommend AMD/ATI", "I have an AMD/ATI card and recommend Nvidia", "It doesn't matter which card I have, I recommend the one where you get the best performance for your money", "I only have used one brand for years and so can't make a reasonable recommendation") I will not vote, but just state my opinion here.
I used ATI/AMD, Nvidia and Intel the last couple of years. And I had no problems with either the hardware or the drivers at all, besides some problems with Intel's 852/855GM and the driver changes made by Intel (and I really can't blame them for sacrificing support for a 2003 low cost integrated graphics solution).
I usually buy the cards that give me the best performance for the money I plan to spend, regardless if it is AMD or Nvidia (I usually don't buy Intel "cards", only get them integrated). I put much more attention in choosing a quality brand of the actual card manufacturer (like ASUS, Sapphire, ...) and getting a good performance.
And I ususally recommend what I would by myself to other users.

I've got a fairly ballsy Nvidia gtx-460 for gaming in Wine and what few Linux games there are. I'd recommend it, it's been working flawlessly in Slackware and Debian using the proprietary drivers.

It doesn't take into account there are people (like me) who have used all 3 types and haven't had any problems with them and would therefore recommend them all based on the end users needs.

I have an ATI Radeon HD 3200 card that came with the desktop, it's ok but I prefer Nvidia cards. Some compiz effects are not supported with the ATI card I have. I'm going for a nvidia card very soon.

My vote is I have an ATI card BUT, I have no comments on recommending it :/

It is not flawed at all. I don't want people recommending a card that they don't use. It is a multiple choice poll, so you can vote for all that apply as long as you use the card. You don't have to vote.

I voted both have and recommend ATI and Nvidia.
Although I am not currently using an Nvidia card, i have had a good run out of both.

Currently I am using a Radeon HD5770, 1G, I use it mainly for its triple head support. That being said, it plays Oil Rush (Unigine Engine) at 1920x1080 comfortably.

Yeah, right. Who has an intel card these days? Virtually no-one. The _only_ 'video card' that intel has ever released was the i740, circa 1998. They barely sold, they had very disappointing performance. I've thrown a whole 12'' x 12''x 24'' (30cm x 30cm x 60cm) box full of nothing but i740 cards away at work.

The only way that intel could 'sell' its 'cards' in by intergrating them into the chipset, and now the CPU.

BTW, intel normally refers to its intergrated video as 'graphics', or 'graphics xxxx', or 'intergrated graphics'. I dont recall seeing intel call any of its intergrated video as a 'video card'.

I have to take the same path as TobiSGD, I have ATI/AMD cards, nVidia cards, and a few systems using the intel intergrated graphics. They all have strengths and weaknesses.

Same here, though I do sometimes take politics into account. Right now I'm more fond of ATI/AMD, they are doing more to help open soruce than nVidia ATM IMO, but for some uses (eg HTPC) I'd still get an nVidia card. I tend to not recommend intel intergrated, they are can be horrible and because of the way that intel has pushed themselves into the video market though market share (chipsets/CPUs), not because of technical superiority.

So you make a poll were you omit the answers you don't like? In that case, the poll is not only flawed, it is worthless.

This means, because I am using only AMD/ATI and Intel currently (have used Nvidia before, also), I shouldn't recommend Nvidia cards, despite the fact that I know them very well? And that I only should recommend cards I personally am using right now (which would come down to currently one integrated ATI, one plug-in AMD and two integrated Intel chips)?
Where is the point in that?

I can't vote for all that applies to me, since I currently don't use a Nvidia card, but recommend them if it is a good thing for an asking member to get a Nvidia card.

I have not voted, since your answers don't apply to my case (and I seem not to be the only one, at least k3lt01 and cascade9 seem to have the same opinion about which cards they recommend).

Well, if you have had an nvidia card in the past, you can still vote for it. You don't have to have on exactly at this moment, but at least recently, I mean within 10 years. Who knows, maybe the quality of the cards have decreased with time.

I want to gauge the quality of the cards and drivers of current graphics cards. If you have a better way, make a new poll.

While I fully agree that the poll does need more options, the title of the poll does make it's purpose clear:

"What graphics card do you have and do you recommend it ?"

Those who have a certain type of graphics card and do not recommend it, do not vote.

If the poll sets out to assess numbers of those using and recommending a certain brand ("brand loyalists") then it's fit for purpose.

But yes, the other options ("I have card x/y/z and do not recommend it", etc) would make the poll much more useful.

I was thinking of adding more options, but I wanted to keep it simple and positive. If I had posted for example that I don't recommend a certain brand, they would have said that the card I had is very old and it was probably just a bad apple, etc. I've been told that ATI now makes much better cards than it the past, etc.

In response to this I decided to limit the options for the following reasons:

1) I want to keep the poll focused.
2) I want to keep the poll current, this means current cards, that's why I said that you should be using the card now, so that can gauge current hardware and driver quality rather than many many years ago.
3) I want to keep the poll positive, I don't want flame wars to start based upon a bad experience someone had with a card that may have been a bad apple or had manufacturing flaws or the company makes better cards now, etc.

This is why I limited your choices in a most evil and draconian way

I feel that it will provide almost as much info as adding the negative choices would have, but would keep the poll open, positive, away from flame wars.

I know that some posters in the thread have been following me closely, and trying to derail my posts, etc. So that's the reason why I limited this poll, to prevent them from doing it...

Back on topic ....

The 3D desktop effect, the windows are flat against the cube. And the animated background image i.e skydome for the 3D cube. There were a few others but I don't remember. I uninstalled compiz about 9 months ago.

These effects worked before when I had a nvidia FX5200 card on another computer. Anyway, it's not that important. Compiz is just a novelty.
