linux graphical chess program

I'm looking for a good graphical chess program for Linux, besides gnuchessx which I don't like very much.

This is not really answering your question, but why not play on yahoo, at http://games.yahoo.com/ ?

Anyway, if you looking for software better check freshmeat.net first.

glChess looks cool, http://glchess.sourceforge.net/

here's the search for chess sorted by popularity http://freshmeat.net/search/?q=chess...y_percent+DESC

I do play on yahoo all the time (as ludichess).

But I want a stnad-alone chess program so I can run some analysis of different positions.

Looking at that google search, seems like Crafty is the best one out there. I downloaded it, but it is way over my head in terms of how to compile the thing. He has a millions different options for different hardware and such. Total headache I gave up after 10 minutes.

Anyone want to help me compile Crafty? I downloaded this file:

crafty-18.13.tar.gz

I think it's the latest. I uncompressed the file, and I looked at the Makefile and there are a lot of confusing options on different sections to uncomment based on what kind of hardware platform I'm running on (in my case just a P3-500 running Linux).

I just left it at it's default (I don't know if that's good or bad), and did a make.

Now the instructions say I have to make a book for it. But I don't know where to download it or how to compile this part.

Does that mean you were using xboard? Because you might like to try eboard (should be a standard package, it is in debian).

This is how I did it.

First, I downloaded crafty-19.19.tar.gz from ftp://ftp.cis.uab.edu/pub/hyatt/. Then I extracted it.

Then, I went in that directory and typed
$ make -j linux

An executable called crafty was made in that folder, so I moved it into a folder called /home/mark/programs/crafty.

Next, I went to ftp://ftp.cis.uab.edu/pub/hyatt/books/ and downloaded book.bin and books.bin. I put them in the same directory as crafty.

You might also want to look at the documentation which is in the same site.
