Try Quanta+, it has it all: syntax highlighting, autocompletion, a lot of programming languages support, work on remote project with ftp, etc, etc....

I like NVU. It is a bit basic compared with the likes of Dreamweaver but it is quick and easy to use.

so are enough tools developed for linux for it to be able to compare with the windows platform? my understanding was that linux was still behind in this area.

How Could You Think That?

8 Behind Windows in this area? You've got to be kidding. The predominant web server on the planet is Apache. The predominant web development language is php. One of the most widely used databases to support dynamic content is mysql. All available on Linux. The number, types, and capabilities of the development tools available is nearly endless.

The short answer is yes, it is most definately a suitable platform and mature, robust and highly capable development tools are readily available.
