Linux fell in love with one of my directories

I do not know what is going on but when i start XTERM it does not start
in my home directory (as it was usually before) but it starts somewhere
in one of my directories.
I renamed this directory, but Linux still found it.
Then I moved the directory to anoter place Linux found it there!
Then I TARred the directory.

Linux started to insult me with these words:

"shell-init: could not get current directory: getcwd: cannot access parent
directories: No such file or directory"

and stopped obeying "ls" command, so I had to extract the directory from archive.

Does anybody know what the HAL is going on? I'm afraid of this beast.
Help me!

Igor.

The name of directory is PS.FILES.
It contains only postscript files nothing else,
no hidden files, no executables, nothing special.
I rebooted my computer and now everything
works correctly again. But it is interesting what
happened. About /etc/profile : thank you for reply,
I tried to do this before reboot and it did not help.
