Linux Distribution to contribute to

I'm looking for a Linux distribution to contribute to. I want to learn the system they use to make patches or submit additions to. I don't have a lot of time to devote, but I have a little.
I know you can get involved with many of the big name distros out there, but I'm looking for a distro where I can contribute and feel like I'm part of the project and part of a team. But I don't think a larger distro is the answer. I'm looking for something a little smaller I think. I was hoping to get some suggestions?

Thank you

Where are you located? I'm sure there are many smaller distros that can use help with things like translation, artwork, testing, bug reporting, bug verifying, etc etc etc.

Apart from thinking about it: have you actually tried it?
What is "a little" time and what do you think you can accomplish in that time?
Any particular skills or familiarity with certain applications, frameworks or code you should showcase?
And should it really be a distro or could it be any type of project? (Like http://sourceforge.net/p/forge/helpwanted/ ?)
Just being curious.

I'm in the U.S.
To be honest I don't exactly know how much time. Possibly an hour a day. Yes I've been apart of a distribution before. I like bash scripting, do not like C. I could do packaging. I could also do testing and I'm well versed in html and css.
It doesn't have to be a distribution, it could be a project of some kind.
