Linux chat software
I run Red Hat Linux 7.3 as a server and PDC (Samba 2.2.3a). I once was told that it is possible to get an opensource software that can enable Windows LAN clients exchange chat messages like they do on the web using Yahoo! messenger or Windows messenger. Could someone help clarify this and let me know what I need to have this work.

I think he is just looking for an MSN client --> AMSN (http://amsn.sf.net)

Actually, it looks like the jabber is what I need. I downloaded jabber-1.4.3.tar.gz and I am having problems installing it mainly because I am not very experienced with this. I learnt that I needed to have Pth installed first so I downloaded pth-1.3.6 and installed successfully. I had initially tried installing wpjabber-1.1.5.tar.gz but it did not work and I did not know how to uninstall it. I went ahead to install jabber-1.4.3.tar.gz and even though it installed, when I try to run it, I get this error - "error while loading shared libraries: libpth.so.13: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory"
Could someone help me remove the wpjabber I had installed and help fix the error I get when I run the jabberd daemon? I managed to download and install a windows IM client - exodus. Looks ready to connect to a server. |
Another naive query is, how can I confirm that the program is installed and correctly eg the Pth?

sry, misread, jabber indeed
|
I kind of got this working by following the Jabber Administration guide. Now struggling toconfigure the windows clients.
|
I succeeded configuring the server, downloaded 3 clients: Exodus, Miranda and Yabber but even then only Miranda works but with some hitches. Anyone out there who uses jabber and miranda?
|
GAIM also does this.. and its included is several distros..
Its probably not the best, but it may be the easiest.. |
I finally got it working with JAJC (Just another jabber client) the other client was sending a message without the FQDN and the jabber server could not deliver. My next problem is to start the jabber server as a daemon but I will post that under Linux Newbie.
