Linux boot problems

Im new in all the linux stuff and I tried to install Fedora Core 2 (64 bit) on my pc. When I tried to run the installer with the GUI enabled my whole system hangs suddenly!
So I tried to install it with the text based installer, that worked fine. But now, when I boot my whole system hangs when booting.
I also tried booting Knoppix 3.1, but that hangs to. Windows XP is working fine somehow.

Im using a K8V se deluxe mobo with 1 serial ata device connected to the VIA Chipset and i've got the X800 videocard from ati. Does anyone have any suggestions? I've got a AMD 64 3000+ cpu

Sounds like it doesn't like your video card. Check for compatibility and latest drivers.

Can you post a few lines of output before the system hangs? That would help diagnose the exact problem. The way to boot to a non-GUI is boot to single user mode (use 'e' to edit your grub command line and append the word "single" [no quotes] at the end of the kernel command line -- there may be an option called failsafe that does this for you). You can then edit /etc/inittab to change the default runlevel from 5 to 3, which will cause the system not to start the GUI on boot, or you can just install your drivers from single user mode. If the problem is with the frame buffer, signle user mode is about the way to go to get into a minimally working system and try to fix the problem.

If you need detailed driver help, please post the make and model of your video card and any other relevant hardware. Also, if you have USB devices, try unplugging them, I've heard stories of kernels choking on them at boot.

If nothing else works, try running a 32-bit version of the kernel. That could also be responsible. I dont think 64 bit is running as smoothly as had been planned at this point.

Hope you get it working.

ATI support sucks for Linux. I think that would make you pretty much up a river without a paddle. Maybe ATI released a driver for it, im not sure. Always a good idea to check.

Using the kernel dri, not ati's drivers..
I agree, ati's drivers suck.. They kept crashing the box..

Hi Gero,
Similar system, similar problems:

ASUS K8V-SE-DX
AMD64 3000+
512MB DDR400
nvidia fx5200 (<- crap)
120GB Maxtor IDE

I'm NOT new to linux or computers, but man, what a task to get this thing going.

I'm starting to think that the K8V is a complete piece of junk. Nothing but problems with it from day one.

Make absolutely sure you're running *at least* a 350W power supply. I've heard people running 500's with this board just to "get the bugs out". I'm running a 400W, but I'm starting to think it's not enough.

Here's where I sit so far:
After finally getting the stupid thing to actually boot from CD's (changed my power supply):
Install XP Pro (works fine)
Install Fedora Core 2 (64 bit version) which installs GRUB by default and give ABSOLUTELY no option for LILO (isn't linux about choice?). I've NEVER had luck with GRUB. It's worked very seldom for me. I'm in the LILO camp on this one. Also, during installation, I get a drive geometry error. The drive is correct in the BIOS though. Leads me to believe this MoBo is crap.
Reboot
System hangs at "GRUB"
No more, no less.
Try to restore XP boot loader by booting from CD or floppy disc. Neither works. The motherboard simply ignores boot sequences set in the BIOS and goes for the IDE drive. I think it actually does spin the floppy and CD drives, but it just doesn't "find" a bootable disc (even though it booted off the disc previously....).

I really don't know what the problem is here. People have said the the onboard drive controllers are buggy. Which I would believe. But people also say that there is a bug in Fedora Core 2 and Mandrake 10 that causes drive-geometry errors/non-bootable systmes. Who to believe...

Actually, I don't know why I replied. I have no solution to your problem. I guess just to rant and bring this issue up in these forums.

Good luck!

Exo
