linux /boot backup problem related with GRUB

Hello all !

I found a really strange behavior of GRUB bootloader when I backup my linux system (Linux RedHat 9.0 Shrike). The problem is to restore the /boot content. Here is an example.

When I do like

tar -czvlps --same-owner --atime-preserve -f /home/boot.tgz /boot/*

and then

rm /boot/* -r -f

and then
tar -xzvf /home/boot.tgz -C /boot

I can't boot my system (I see only GRAB on the screen and then system halted. This is really strange for me.
Any explanation and suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Vadim.

The first thing I'd try is booting with a Knoppix CD, mounting /boot (or / if /boot is not it's own seperate partition), and looking to see what you actually have in /boot after your restore via tar.

Is it possible that permissions are getting changed in the process of backing up and then restoring?
