linux boot


Hi ALL
I am unable to login as a root user.In single user mode also root user is coming as unknown user.I want to login into the system as I don't want to lose my data.
Some gdm problem is also coming.
If you have any answers please reply me.

Would love to help, how about some information first...

What distro, what bootloader, etc?

If I understand you correctly, even under single user mode you cannot login? If so, you should be able to take a linux bootable CD (possibly the installation cd) and mount your hard drives to access the data. If not, grab a live cd and we should be able to save data and then reinstall if need be.
