Hello folks!
I'm beginner in Linux, I want to have a own server but I don't know what I need. I have a Red Hat 8.0 and some programs. One of my specially questions are:
1. do I need a firewall?
2. can I install everything I need to put my homepage on the net?

Hello and welcome to LQ :)

1. Yes, definitely. You are going to be opening yourself up to a hoard of possibly attackers, you need to harden (tm) your box before you go live. Check out the first thread in the Security Forum for more information on how.

2. Yes, I am thinking you mean all the servers. You should have Apache on your install discs, that should be all you need to go live with an http server. However, you will likely also need to register a domain, and probably need to find out if your IP is dynamic, and if so, find a registrar that is cool with that (or head over to www.zoneedit.com and use them as your DNS).

If I want to put my homepage on the internet for a fiwe days before I get a firewall, How big is the risk to do that? Can the hackers put the homepage down immidelity?

Can you get me a list of all programs I need to put my homepage on the internet, (I have a function to recieve and send mail).

That's really it. But you shouldn't take the risk of throwing up a vulnerable box like that. If you want temporary hosting look at some of the solutions around. You **could** go live on your own box without hardening (tm) it, but you could also leave your car unlocked with the windows down, keys in the ignition and a sign that says "steal me" on the windshield. It's your choice. It's not a requirement to harden your box, it's for your own safety, you decide how safe you wanna be, nobody can decide that for you ;)

because you are new to Linux, i suggest you slow down and get used to it before just putting up a website on an insecure server. maybe you dont have the time, but you really should take the time to learn. by rushing, you will only cause yourself frustration and hours of wondering "what the hell is going on". if you are brand new to Linux and you really need something going, i would suggest buying a book. you can find a lot of information online, but books are usually better organized and can save you a lot of time.

Yes, take your time. As you will find linux is the most secure OS you will come across, but can be the most insecure to a newbie. Hackers find vunerable computers by chance, they perform scans and send out trojans to find unsecure computers. If you have one out there, they will find it and exploit it.

But I still will tri to put a website today. Can someone recomend a "good"antivirus program for Linux, this's not necessary to download from internet, I can by it from the store today.

An antvirus is not gonna be as much problem as you will get root'd which means your system will no longer be yours. Linux isn't as plagued with Virus, but it's the possibility of someone taking over your box that should scare you (virii are scary too, and you should guard against them, I'm not trying to downplay that, I'm just trying to point out to you that your concerns are going to be too little...).

I love your enthusiasm, but if you go up (go live) without security, you are really leaving your system naked to anyone with 2 bits of knowledge and an open afternoon.

I strongly suggest you look at free hosting/paid hosting on an extreme temp basis until you harden (tm) your box to the point of it being secure enough to toss on the net.

At the very, very, very least, you'll wanna look at setting up something to log your intrusions:

If you are desperate to get your site up, I would be willing to host it for you for a week or two while you take the time to learn how to secure your box..... I'd rather see some increased bandwidth on my end than a newcomer get shut down before they even get started. I offer this ONLY IF YOU WILL SPEND YOUR TIME HARDENING YOUR BOX. (sorry for all caps guy's/ladies, just wanted to add some emphasis) Just ask and well set it up if you are that adamant.
