Linux based degrees...

I am really interested in picking up a degree based around linux. I think most major companies will make the switch and when this happens, most people wont know what to do.

i did a little bit of research, but i could not find a school thats online that offers courses that focus on linux. I was approved for financial aid so there are a few courses out there that FA will not cover.

any help or suggestions would be great!

Sorry to tell you this, but Linux started making major inroads into companies well over a decade ago. It just keeps growing.

You don't focus a degree on 'Linux', but rather in computer science. Unless you're talking about specific Linux certifications (like RHCE), there is nothing 'Linux' specific...that's like looking for a driving school that will only teach you how to drive Ford's.

Not sure what's so funny. If you want a college degree, then get one. If you want a Linux certification, they're VASTLY different. If you don't know what computer science is, then you really need to do more research about schools and what they offer.

I'm pretty sure it was the "driving school that only teaches you to drive Fords" analogy. It was funny because it was apt.

There's a difference between fields and skills

You can sometimes take classes in certain skills, but college majors are in more generalized fields. You won't find a school that offers Linux as a major, just like you won't find one that offers Windows, or OSX as a major, it just doesn't make sense. The best you can do is take classes that teach certain aspects of the OS, such as an intro programming course that may teach you how to write code and compile on Linux, or a networking class that teaches you network administration on Linux, etc.

A Linux-based degree doesn't exist because it would be of no use to an employer. An operating system is just a tool, you still need to be able to do something useful with it in order to turn it into a profession.

when i was an undergrad cc-30x:'systems programming' was mostly linux with a couple of windows labs. mite be university/department specific so maybe you can visit the labs and see what people are working on.

Your profile doesn't say where you live in the Big Wide World. In the UK we have the Open University which runs Computing and IT courses which could lead to a degree or other qualification. It's a distance learning organisation so you work at your own pace at home. Some courses have Summer schools where you get more face-to-face tutored work.
I've done a couple of non-Computer related courses which were pretty good. Might be worth checking out, I think they may also cater for The-Rest-of-the-World students as well. Try Googling Open University.

Play Bonny!
