Linux at the edge...

The big day for the New Horizons mission to Pluto has finally arrived!

The down data rate is a little slow, glacial in this case, but I still find these things exciting enough to keep my eyes glued to the screen, as it were. The above site has enough related info to feed your curiosity while you wait, well worth browsing for those interested.

And how is this Linux related? From the operations center:

Quote:
...almost all software used is "open source" (include the operating system, which is Linux), meaning the source code is available in case it is ever needed — which is a good thing for a long mission like this.
No surprise there, but always worth taking note!

I like the spokesperson as I have a red head weakness at the knees.

She's adorable. I love redheads too, but she's far, far too young for me.

Yeah, she reminds me of my daughter. That does not mean I cannot admire a fine redhead when I see one.
My brain works kinda funny like that.

Glad I never had a daughter. Although, I'm at forty now so in ten years?

Grate videos. Remind me of a family vacation to Florida and Cape Canaveral. The size of those hangers and moving platforms wow!

Glad I have two - both beauties in my totally unbiased opinion!

As for the comments on the New Horizons spokeslady, she is sharp in all respects, knowledge, enthusiasm and presentation! But let's remember that it is all about the science! If you must drool, please do so in a respectful manner!

Which evokes my all time favorite Far Side (or any!) comic panel...

Shamelessly grabbed from the interwebs...
